The Eden Public School rugby league team has gone down 58-0 to Merimbula Public School in the first round of the PSSA knockout tournament at the George Brown Memorial Oval on Thursday.
The home side found possession hard to come by against a hard-running and skilful Merimbula outfit, who had already posted four tries to take a 20-0 lead by the time Eden first touched the ball.
Cam Christie weaved through the Eden defence and touched down in spectacular fashion for the first four-pointer, which was followed by efforts from Jake Shaw, Jaxon Pilgrim and Jedd Martyn.
Eden finally received their first taste of possession after a Merimbula knock-on near the halfway line, and were able to go straight on the attack when Merimbula were penalised for a dangerous tackle on Lachlan Mitchell.
But Ethan Thiedeman’s last tackle grubber was cleaned up by Merimbula, who crossed for another three tries courtesy of Max Geaghan, Cam Christie and Jake Shaw to take a 34-0 advantage into the halftime break.
Eden coach Michael Kerr stressed the importance of defence during the interval, and his side responded with an improved second-half display where they saw more of the football.
However, they were unable to prevent second half tries from Saxon Frew, Cam Christie, Rhys Pentecost, Caleb Higgins and Will Roberts.
Cam Christie picked up man-of-the-match honours for his hat-trick of tries, with Merimbula’s goals coming from the boots of Jonty Dwyer, Caleb Higgins and Finn Sinclair.
Merimbula will now go on to play Tathra Public School in the next round.
