Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) began work on a section of the Princes Highway 730 metres north of the Haywards Bay bridge on Sunday night.
The $850,000 project will include a concrete barrier between the north and southbound lanes.
‘‘The barrier is designed to improve safety by preventing vehicles crossing the median to the wrong side of the road,’’ an RMS spokesman said.

‘‘The existing narrow median will be replaced by an 800-metre long concrete barrier. Where the median widens, a concrete barrier will be installed on the southbound side with the majority of the existing wide median to remain in place.’’
The spokesman said the location was classified as a black spot after a fatal crash in 2012 when a car crossed the median and hit a truck.
Work will be carried out between 7pm and 5am Sunday to Thursday.
Motorists will still be able to drive through the work site but a 40 km/h speed limit will be in operation during the six weeks of work.
