NOWRA-Bomaderry Jets player Nathan Deaves has made the most of his call-up to the Group 7 Bulls squad, by scoring a try in their nail-biting win in the representative game against Group 6 on Saturday.
Two late tries allowed the Bulls to escape with a 24-22 victory over Group Six in the clash at Centenary Field.
Deaves was a late inclusion on the wing for the Group 7 side, after four injury replacements had to be made from the original squad.
Hooker Hans Schuster opened the scoring early for Group 7, but it was not long before Deaves found himself in the thick of the action, scoring the Bulls second try to give them a 10-nil lead after 12 minutes.
But just when it looked like they might do it comfortably, the reigning NSW Country Tier Two champions eased off the accelerator and handling errors crept in.
Their initially tight marker defence also slipped a notch and Group 6 took advantage with winger Blake Ritchie’s try in the corner.
Jolted out of their slumber, the Group 7 boys grabbed the upper hand again with winger Taylor Hudson’s try for a 14-4 half-time lead.
That didn’t faze the visitors, who trimmed the lead to 14-10 with fullback Michael Lett’s try under the posts 10 minutes into the second half.
Lett scored again with 13 minutes remaining and five-eighth Matt Brasington’s conversion gave them their first lead.
With time ticking away, Group 7 responded with centre Bronx Goodwin’s try from a quick tap. Joel Roberts missed the conversion, but veteran prop Damien Paulissen crashed over three minutes later under the posts and Roberts added the extras for a 24-16 lead.
Inspired by a few words from Lett, Group 6 kept clawing away, cutting the margin to two with Yileen Gordon’s 79th-minute try, but it was not quite enough as Group 7 held on for a tight win.
Sunday afternoon brought more good news for the Nowra-Bomaderry club, with the Jets stringing together their second consecutive win for the season.
Isaac Mumberson, Keiran and Mark Brandon all scored doubles for the Jets as they notched up a convincing 52-16 win over the Milton-Ulladulla Bulldogs at Bill Andriske Mollymook Oval.
The Jets now look to be finding their feet after a slow start to the season and will look to continue their good form when they host Albion-Park Oak Flats at Nowra Showground next Sunday.
