A Health Infrastructure spokesperson said construction on the $11.6 million unit was progressing well.
The project includes a 20-bed mental health sub-acute unit for short-stay admissions, located on the north eastern section of the Shoalhaven Hospital grounds, adjacent to Shoalhaven Street.
Each bed will be in its own room with an en suite, while rooms will be separated into segregated pods within the unit.
The complex also includes elevated internal courtyard areas and quiet activity areas for patient treatment.
The in-patient facility has been elevated above a basement, which provides for car parking as well as a drop-off point and hospital support areas.
A service lift will be included to transport patients and deliveries from the drop-off point to the main floor of the unit.
This unit will be the first sub-acute mental health unit of its kind in the area and will closely link to the community mental health service and the acute mental health services at Shellharbour.
The unit, in conjunction with Shoalhaven Hospital, the GP Super Clinic and the Shoalhaven Regional Cancer Care Centre will establish a strong health precinct in the area.
