Sanctuary Point resident and asthmatic Antonio Williams is sick and tired of unenforced smoking laws and concerned for his health.
“It’s not just my health. These smokers are usually standing outside places like Stockland Nowra where there are kids waiting at bus stops and people forced to walk in and out of the centre through the smoke,” he said.
“I’ve complained before but security doesn’t seem to be doing enough.
“It seems to me like it is just something that is just swept under the carpet and it happens everywhere.
“I’d like to see the local government do more to help protect the children on the South Coast – perhaps by giving security guards and police more power to enforce non-smoking in these areas.”
Stockland Nowra branch manager Kristy Miglion said the law could only be enforced by the NSW Health environmental health officer.
“Our security guards remind customers of the new law and ask them to move on if they continue to disregard the new law,” she said.
“As to be expected initially when the new law commenced we had complaints, however as people become more aware of the new regulation we’ve seen improvement.”
Ms Miglion said she hoped the problem could be amended through continued education and reinforcement of the new law.
