WHAT was forecast to be a pretty ordinary Easter weekend turned out to be an absolute cracker for Shoalhaven fishermen.

The swell was a up for a couple of days, but with light variable winds, ocean conditions were still quite adequate for fishing.
However the rock platforms were coping a battering and were a dangerous spot to be.
It looks as though the swell has stirred up a few reds in and around Jervis Bay, so with the swell dropped right back, it is a good time to sneak in close around the washes and flick those soft plastics or lightly weighted baits for the reds.
Squid are still a pretty easy target in the bay at present and you do not need a boat to catch them.
There are several locations where you can catch squid shore-based in Jervis Bay. Callala Bay Warf at night time, Plantation Point early morning or late in the day with a high tide or with overcast conditions works well, Honeymoon Bay on a high tide, and my favourite spot, Murrays Break Wall between the boat ramp and hole in the wall.
The beaches are looking pretty good after the big swell and after a drive around the local beaches on Monday afternoon, I noticed several really good looking gutters that are sure to have that elusive jewfish patrolling them at some stage.
It is time to start spending those long, lonely and chilly nights on the beach again, but with the good tides not due until the weekend, a couple of afternoons squiding for fresh bait is a good option.
Offshore there are still a few guys picking up marlin out on the shelf, and I have also heard of the odd yellowfin taking the lures meant for marlin.
They have mainly been small fish around 10 to 20 kilograms, but fish up to 50 kilograms have been caught in the past couple of weeks.
The next couple of months will hopefully turn on some hot bluefin action, and from what I can gather, everyone is just waiting for the word that the fish are there.
