I UNDERSTAND there may be concern within the local community regarding the NSW government’s decision to officially include the Shoalhaven within the Illawarra region.

The inclusion of the Shoalhaven in the Illawarra is nothing new – this announcement simply formalises the boundaries of our region and clarifies certain funding and service mechanisms.
The announcement by the NSW government is beneficial for local residents, businesses and the local council. It will provide the Shoalhaven easier access to services and a specific and localised funding pool as well as promotion of our tourism and commercial industries through a new one-stop website.
I am disappointed with criticism that ministers of the NSW government are visiting our region. I will continue to invite ministers to the Shoalhaven in order that they can better understand our unique issues and needs in order to deliver for local residents.
Can I dispel particular fears that the Shoalhaven will suddenly turn into a suburb of Wollongong – in fact it is quite the opposite. The Shoalhaven is unique and a city within its own right. I will always stand up for the South Coast and ensure we get our fair share whilst protecting our local characteristics.
