The reward of seeing the smiles and sheer delight on the children’s faces when the dogs wander into the ward would warm anyone’s heart, bringing sunshine into the child’s day when they are feeling so unwell and missing their home and pets.
When my husband was in Karinya I was invited to bring our Dalmatian Monte in to visit. Monte was missing his dad and not understanding where he was. When Monte saw him and jumped on the bed and lay down he was so happy. Whether Richard knew he was there or not I don’t know as he was in a coma, but the fact Monte was able to see his dad had a calming effect on us all and we were so thankful. The other patients all had a pat too and their smiles were gorgeous to see.
Pets are such a big, wholesome part of our lives, it is a comfort and joy to allow them into hospital when loved ones are ill and can certainly make a difference in such a positive way.
