The first of two LHD ships being built for the Defence Force, Canberra arrived in Jervis Bay early Tuesday morning and will be in the bay on Wednesday as well as for part of its first at sea trial.
The ship has also operated within Port Phillip Bay and near Eden as part of the trials.
The first sea trial will last for 12 days and will culminate with the ship entering Sydney Harbour for the first time.
The Canberra class vessel is 230.82 metres long and 32 metres at its widest point, weighing 27,000 tonnes, the largest vessel to serve in the RAN.
It can transport 1046 soldiers and their equipment and accommodate up to 110 vehicles.
It also has the capability for up to six helicopters to operate simultaneously.
