Mr Tan was driving the silver sedan that collided with a table-top truck on The Wool Road near Naval College Road at Worrowing Heights around 10.30am.
Police found Mr Tan deceased inside the sedan.
The 35-year-old truck driver was not injured in the collision but was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
Connie Carden from Vincentia, who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident, contacted
the Register to commend the quick thinking actions of another motorist who ran barefoot to
the nearby roundabout to warn traffic.
“Acts of bravery like this often go unnoticed,” Ms Carden said.
During the incident a number of people entered the crime scene with a man allegedly punching a female police officer in the face.
He has been charged with assaulting police, intimidation and driving offences and will appear at a future sitting of Nowra Local Court.
Investigations into the accident are continuing and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to call Nowra Police on 4421 9699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The Bay and Basin Cricket Club will honour Mr Tan, who was affectionately known as Chook, staging a fund-raising day for his family this Sunday, March 16.
Club president Chris Labb said the club intended to stage a number of Super 8s games and a barbecue at Sanctuary Point Oval.
“All individuals, families and friends are invited from all parts of his life to dig deep and come along on the day,” Mr Labb said.
“There will be mixed teams, with the focus on having some fun, a laugh and supporting Chook’s family.”
Participants are encouraged to wear a Hawaiian or at least a loud shirt.
Sunday’s activities will start at 10.30am, the cost is just $5 to play, $2 for sausages and $2 for soft drinks.
