THE Optus Nowra Velo Club returned to the Flinders Industrial Complex last Sunday for graded scratch races where Jake Whitton starred with two wins from two starts.

Whitton won both events on the club’s division one program by clear margins although he was chased all the way to the line by the pursuing pack.
Whitton took the first race, a 20 minute effort by 100 metres from Andrew Lowe, Godfrey Green and Bel Althaus, and then won race two which was a 30 minute hit out, by a similar margin from Paul Mackie, Godfrey Green, Andy Lowe and Matt Smith.
Others to follow over the line included Ian Kielly, Tarni Cunningham, Tim Devlin and Mark Astley.
Rob Pickard scored a solo win in the first round of division three racing when he crossed the line 15 seconds clear of a sprinting bunch where Mel Kilby grabbed second position from Phil Rice by less than half a wheel.
Gary Bryce was fourth and Hubert Driehuis fifth ahead of Bruce Jenkins, Michael Thompson, Mark Emerton, Hanry Wakeford, Paul Nancekivell and Darran O’Connell.
Emo turned the tables on the field in race two when he cleared out on lap two and held on to win by half a minute.
Gary Bryce jumped clear of the bunch to take second place from Rice, Kilby, Driehuis, Pickard, Jenkins, Thompson, Wakeford and Nancekivell.
Division four raced two events over 20 minutes each and both finishes were close.
Jo Chalain took out race one by a wheel from Graham Johns, John Cullity, Rod Pierce and Tess McLachlan.
Cullity changed tactics and led into the finish and sprinted from the front to win race two from Chalian while Pierce was third ahead of Johns, McLachlan and O’Connell.
The MIE 2014 teams challenge continues on Braidwood Road this Sunday with round two of the series.
This program will the same format of the first round where riders will race a 14 kilometre graded scratch race and a 14 kilometre handicap.
Hanlon Windows goes into this event with a one point lead over Optus Nowra while Optus rider Levi Johns leads the individual series points.
The Bomaderry Vet Hospital/Coffeeliscious team will host the program that starts in Wugan Street at 8am.
