Mr Atkins won a number of prizes at last week’s Berry Show and backed it up in Nowra with another swag of awards.
But he has revealed that his success might not have been if luck wasn’t on his side.
Mr Atkins left his Yatte Yattah property at 4.30am on Friday to get his entries to Nowra nice and early.
Driving his wife Val’s hatchback, something he never does, he managed to pack the back of the car with his roses and get them to Nowra.
He had unloaded all his entries and had them in the pavilion when the call came about a car parked outside that had a flat tyre.
You guessed it, it was the former mayor’s vehicle.
“I was so lucky it didn’t happen on the way up when the car was fully loaded with roses,” he said.
“I don’t drive the car, had no idea where the jack is, or if there is even a spare.”
Luckily, former president John Bennett was on hand and cheerfully changed the tyre for Mr Atkins.
