THE government might be claiming the lodging of development applications for the new National Broadband Network is the start of the local rollout of the service, but the NBN Co website doesn’t actually indicate any new rollouts for the local area.

NBN Co is set to lodge planning proposals with Kiama, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven councils for its fixed wireless network infrastructure.
The NBN rollout map on its website indicates some fixed lines and fixed wireless service available in a handful of locations in the South Nowra and Vincentia areas but they are mainly in new developments.
According to the map, work has started at St Georges Basin and Sussex Inlet.
The website does state it is currently under review, pending the introduction of new government policy and that some content may not be current and users should not rely solely on the information.
The Coalition abandoned the previous Labor government’s plan for a universal fibre-to-the-premises system and will instead have a combination of some pure fibre, fibre to the node with copper to the home and fixed wireless.
“As promised by the Coalition government, the NBN rollout is coming,” Gilmore MP Ann Sudmalis said.
“The long awaited fast access to broadband via the fixed wireless network will now reach local homes, farms and businesses.
“Mid 2015 will see the start of
fast broadband to our towns and
villages.
“Our region will be able to access internet speeds that many living in big cities take for granted.”
She said being a tourist destination Gilmore suffered with the existing system.
“When there is an influx of visitors, it just cannot cope,” she said.
Mrs Sudmalis said the wireless infrastructure was for small, remote towns with less than 500 residences.
Over the coming months, NBN Co will work with local councils to
identify appropriate locations
for the fixed wireless network
infrastructure.
