Once again the veterans were on fire on the track, with Leith Babian breaking the men’s 40 to 49 years 400 metres, which has been held since 1988 by Patrick Greene.
Leith has had a fantastic season thus far and securing the 400 metre record with a time of 56.9, taking 0.9 seconds off the old record, is the icing on the cake for him.
Bill Broughton has been breaking records all season and did it all again claiming the men’s 60 to 69 years 1000 metre record with a time of 3.36, shaving nearly two seconds off his own record which he set earlier this season.
Just over a second behind him was Linda Wetherill with a fantastic time of 3.37.7, taking out the current women’s 50 to 59 years 1000 metre record of 4.01.0, which was also set earlier this season.
Congratulations to Leith, Bill and Linda, we will definitely be keeping our eyes on you all at the upcoming Country Championships.
Do not forget the club night which will be held at Beaton Park Wollongong on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, with a starting time of 6.30pm.
This is a synthetic track and will be a great opportunity for athletes to try out the venue in anticipation of the Country Championships, which will be held on January 24, 25 and 26, 2014.
For any information regarding the Country Championships please access the link on the club website.
This week is round 13 of the summer competition and events include high jump, long jump, triple jump, javelin, discus and shot put in the field events.
On offer in track are 60, 100 and 600 metres, and mini medleys.
The usual 1500 metres will be replaced by a “Christmas Mile” with some awards up for grabs.
The evening will conclude with some “healthy party food.”
Field events kick off at 6pm with track following at about 6.20pm.
Make sure you arrive well ahead of this time to get some stretches and warm ups in.

See you on the track, Maxine G.
