Ms Porter passed away five years ago and her partner was on the judging panel for the prize.
“We went to Sydney University together and knew each other there,” said Ms Mansell.
“It was very nice to win this prize.
“I spent a tiny bit of [the prize money] on a painting by Suzi Krawczyk; it was a Christmas present to myself.”
Ms Mansell is already looking forward to her next project, collaborating on an opera with noted composer Andrew Batt-Rawden.
Ms Mansell and Mr Batt-Rawden have previously worked together to create Seven Stations in any order – love poems for Sydney, which will soon be released on CD.
