Despite spending only $29,000 of $100,000 in funding set aside by the NSW government, a staff recommendation proposes disbanding the steering committee that for three and a half years has tried to see the lighthouse restored.
That recommendation will be voted on this afternoon.
The recommendation comes after council declared it did not want to have to fund the continued maintenance of the heritage listed structure with has fallen into disrepair after years of neglect and vandalism.
Staff have called for the structure to be retained in its current condition with minor improvements and the disbandment of the community based steering committee.
Ann Hollis-Coates, who was on the steering committee from its inception until May this year, said she was bitterly disappointed.
“I am amazed that we are going to get dumped mid-stream. Now because there are accessibility problems suddenly we are going to forget about what we had met for three and half years about,” she said.
