A FIRE that broke out in bush behind businesses on the northern side of Quinns Lane at South Nowra threatened homes and businesses at 1pm today. RFS has instructed residents that it is too late to evacuate, and to stay calm. At least 10 fire trucks from RFS, Fire and Rescue NSW and NPWS were on scene protecting properties as the fire made its way toward homes on Old Southern Road. Roads were blocked as emergency services worked around the streets. Thick smoke blacked out the sun at one stage as tyres behind the commercial buildings burned.
A re-ignition of the hazard reduction burn on Rockhill Road, North Nowra has been contained and crews there are mopping up.
There has been a report of powerlines down over a motorhome at Jaspers Brush but all occupants are out of the vehicle and safe.
Meanwhile, the RFS has issued a Watch and Act advice for the Werriton fire west of Ulladulla so nearby residents make plans in the event of the blaze spreading.
The fire has burnt more than 100 hectares and the Western Distributor road has been closed as a precaution.
The blaze is being monitored by aircraft but wind is preventing water bombing. At this stage no properties are being threatened.
