ONE of the motorcyclists involved a serious motorcycle accident at Lake Conjola on Wednesday had his leg amputated as a result of his injuries.
Police said that at about 5:15am on Wednesday, two men were riding their unregistered motorcycles in opposite directions along Lake Conjola Road at Lake Conjola when they collided.
Both men were thrown from their motorcycles.
A 20-year-old man, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained serious head injuries while his 25-year-old friend sustained serious lower leg injuries.
Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics attended the scene and both men were airlifted to St George Hospital for further treatment.
The 20-year-old remains in a serious condition while his friend underwent emergency surgery to have his leg amputated and remains in a critical condition.
Police attached to the Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit are continuing investigations into the collision.
The accident occurred just several hours before the launch of Motorcycle Awareness Week.
The annual initiative of the Motorcycle Council of NSW, Motorcycle Awareness Week aims to raise public awareness of issues affecting motorcyclists including road safety.
