SHOALHAVEN Ex-Servicemen made a strong start to their premiership defence, posting 9/238 from 73 overs on the first day against Ulladulla United at Ulladulla Sports Park.
After winning the toss, Ex-Servos got things going early with openers Paul Meakins and Matt Tyler (24) putting together a first-wicket partnership of 40.
Meakins then had some good support from Simon Schomtz at first drop, as they put on 103 for the second wicket, before their partnership was broken by Peter King.
Schmotz made a handy 40, while Meakins struck eight boundaries on his way to his sides top score of 73.
Chris Bramely was the only top-order batsman for Ex-Servos not to reach double figures, with stand-in skipper Shane Halliday and George Dickie making valuable contributions of 23 to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Ex-Servos managed to bat out the day with James Spackman (13) and Dean Jones (6) finishing unbeaten at the end of the day.
Peter King was the star with the ball for the home side, bagging an impressive 5/68 from his 24 overs, with all five scalps falling in the top order.
Newcomer Michael Devlin was the next best for Ulladulla with 2/43 from 15 overs.
The Ulladulla bowlers have now had some time to settle in at their new home ground at Ulladulla Sports Park and will need to do a good job with the bat next Saturday if they are going to take first innings points.
