NIC Maddinson has dreamt of playing for Australia since his days playing junior cricket in the Shoalhaven and it looks like his goal will be fulfilled this week.
Maddinson is currently in India with the Australian Twenty20 team and is expected to make his debut in the international at Rajkot, which starts 12.30am Friday, Australian time.
Before leaving for India, the 21-year-old said he was very excited at the prospect of living out his boyhood dream.
“All I ever wanted to do as a kid was play for Australia,” Maddinson said.
“I also wanted to play for NSW and I’ve been lucky enough to have that opportunity, now I’ve got the chance to prove myself on the national stage,” he added.
Maddinson learned of his selection a few weeks ago after receiving a call from chairman of selectors John Inverarity while he was playing a spot of golf.
The call came as a nice surprise, but initially he had to keep the news to himself and his family before the squad was officially announced last week.
Maddinson said he is looking forward to his first outing with the full Australian team and is trying not to be too nervous about the experience.
“The week in camp will be a good introduction,” he said.
“The beauty of domestic cricket is that I’ve already played with and against the other Aussie guys while I’ve been playing for NSW.
“There’s lots of NSW guys in the squad, including my house mate Moises Henriques, so hopefully it won’t be too hard to fit in.”
While Maddinson will be looking for a big performance to keep his name in the mind of national selectors, he is just as focused on performing well for NSW this summer.
“The beginning of the season is always an exciting time of year.
“We’ve got the first game out of the way and started off with a win, so hopefully that’s a sign of things to come.”
