THE Kiama Leisure Centre has reopened to the public seven months after a series of tornadoes ripped through the southern Illawarra.
One of the tornadoes caused extensive internal and external damage to the leisure centre, forcing the centre’s 900 members, and more than 1400 children enrolled in the centre’s swimming classes to make alternative arrangements.
Since February, about $2 million worth of improvements have been made to the centre, some funded through insurance, while other improvements were part of planned upgrades funded by Kiama council.
Kiama Leisure Centre manager Jenene Gilbert said that when the centre reopened its doors on Monday, it was seven months to the day since the tornado struck.
Ms Gilbert said while the feedback from patrons had been positive, it had also been a happy homecoming for leisure centre staff, some of whom had been diverted to other roles within Kiama council during the centre’s closure.
