South Coast AFL
Reserve Grade Grand Final
Albatross Demons 9.4(58)
Port Kembla Blacks 6.15(51)
JUST two weeks ago the Albatross Demons were thumped by 81 points by the Port Kembla Blacks in the semi-finals, but a lot can change in a fortnight.
While they were probably the underdogs going into Saturday’s grand final at North Dalton Park, the Demons stunned their opponents 58-51.
Given a second chance to knock the Blacks off their perch, where they have spent the whole season, the Demons got it right when it counted the most.
A slow start saw the Demons trailing 39-20 at half-time, but whatever their coach Brett Kelly had to say to his team during the break must have worked.
The third and fourth quarter sparked a massive turnaround, where it seemed the Demons could do no wrong and the Blacks could do no right.
Leading goal kicker Chris Weller was on song for the Demons, with six majors, while Jonty Kelly, Simon Blizzard and James Nicoll chipped in with one each.
The Blacks were off target with their kicking for most of the match, but particularly in the third quarter where they managed only three points and saw their lead completely disappear.
In a relatively quiet final quarter, each team only kicked one goal, but the Demons had already done the damage and much to the delight of their vocal supporters, held on for a memorable win.
Aaron Smits was named man of the match for the Demons while Chris Weller, Simon Blizzard, Corey Warrington and their captain Matt Cordner were the standouts for the Demons.
The club is currently in a state of rebuilding and as a result, did not field a team in first grade this year, but it is something they are hoping for next season.
A number of their players will be posted to different locations next year, so there is no doubt the win will be a fitting end to their time at Albatross.
