THE Nowra Athletics Club 2013/14 season of track and field kicks off on Wednesday, September 11 at Ron Brown Oval, South Nowra.
The evening will be the first meet for the new season and will take the form of receiving applications and fees from 5.30pm.
There will be some track and field events to be followed by a 10 kilometre race for male and female distance runners 16 years and over.
The graded pointscore will start the following week on September 18.
There has been plenty of talk already among club members about the running of 10 kilometres on the track.
As the cross country season has just finished, most runners are in top shape and will need to be to complete 25 laps.
While most runners have never run the race on the track, plenty have seen the world’s best on TV over the years, including the recently crowned Mo Farah from England who won the world championships only two weeks ago in around 27 minutes.
Recently on the world stage the race has been dominated by Kenyans and Ethiopians, but next week the local event will be dominated by some of the regulars at the Nowra club like Damian Smith and Leith Babian.
The women will be racing alongside the men and the competition is also heating up with local mum Rebecca Eastment preparing to run lap after lap, as is Chrissy Suffolk and a handful of other women to ensure the success of the first ever 10 kilometre track race for the club.
This race will only be held once per year so if you think you can make it then do not put it off another season.
Come along, have a go and then you can say you did 10 kilometres on the track.
Happy running, Paul.
