LEVI and Nick Johns won their respective grades in the Optus Nowra Velo Club’s program on the Flinders Industrial Complex course last Sunday.
Nick was the first of the brothers to score when he won the division three event by a length after 55 minutes of racing.
Nick picked a good wheel to follow into the finish area then hit out hard over the last 100 metres to hold Illawarra’s Robert Hernandez at a length.
Mitch Cunningham placed third, with another bike length separating him from Hernandez.
Hubert Driehuis was close up for fourth followed by Paul Nancekivell, Gary Bryce, Phil Rice and Rob Pickard.
Rice provided plenty of aggression, with constant attacks on the Trim Street climb, but a stiff wind over the top had the bunch back together on each lap. Only three riders dropped off during the race and a bunch sprint finish was to decide the results.
Levi Johns took the division two event by half a length from Dylan Oaten, Scott Thompson and Damian Mason after 70 minutes of lapping the Flinders circuit.
This event had plenty of starters, but early attacks saw early splits in the field.
Thompson forced the first split and was off the front with Johns, Oaten, Godfrey Green and Jade Colligan.
The chase from behind was led by Mason along with Paul Mackie, Tim Devlin and Ian Kielly.
Green came back to the chase while Mason and Kielly chased across the gap to the lead but only Mason made contact.
With half of the race gone there were five in the lead and split groups of two or three chasing from behind.
Fifteen minutes remained when Colligan dropped out of the lead, and then in the final lap, Johns took advantage of a Mason lead out to jump forward for the win.
Jade Colligan finished alone for fifth place and then came Mackie, Devlin and Kielly.
There was another time gap back to Green and Mark Astley and finally Mel Kilby finished ahead of Natasha Mullany.
Local racing continues next Sunday on Braidwood Road (MR92) where the Optus Nowra Velo Club will hold round nine of the MacDonald International Teams Challenge series as graded scratch races.
Start time will be 9am with entries closing at 8.45am.
The Bomaderry Vet Hospital/Coffeeliscious team will host the event.
