MEMBER for Kiama Gareth Ward has been elected as chairman of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters.
He replaces Wollondilly MP Jai Rowell, who has been chairman over the past year and was last week elected as the Liberal Party’s Deputy Whip in the Lower House.
Mr Ward, who has been a member of the standing committee since June 2011, said he was looking forward to the new role.
“This committee has oversight with respect to the state’s electoral law as well as conducting inquiries into electoral matters.
“One of my personal passions is strengthening the law and the system to crack down on voter fraud. I look forward to continuing this campaign as chairperson of this committee.”
The joint standing committee has undertaken several reviews over the past two years, including the Review
of the Parliamentary Electorates and Elections Act 1912 and the Election Funding, Expenditure and Disclosures Act 1981.
