DEAN McCudden was named most successful bread exhibitor in the Baking Associations of Australia Wollongong Baking Show.
After the competition on August 7 a number of trophies made their way back to the Shoalhaven with bakers from Bake House Delight in East Nowra and Bakers Delight in Nowra.
Dean McCudden from Bakers Delight came home with 10 trophies, including one for Most Successful Bread Exhibitor.
The competition attracted about 400 exhibitors from across NSW.
The bread was judged on appearance, volume, aroma, texture and colour during the event.
“My strong point has always been appearance and I think getting that right comes down to experience,” Mr McCudden said.
“I’ve been baking for 16 years.”
Ironically 16 years ago Mr McCudden started his apprenticeship under John Reminis, who now owns the award-winning Bake House Delight in East Nowra.
“When I was still at school I did work experience with John when he owned Gerringong Bakery, I really liked it and worked with him when I left school,” he said.
“After that I opened my own store in Queensland and ran that for eight years before returning to Nowra.”
Mr Reminis’ son John junior has won a number of national and state awards during the past year and was also successful at the Wollongong competition.
He brought home 16 trophies including Champion Loaf of the Show.
Apprentices from both bakeries also picked up a number of trophies.
