THE Shoalhaven Greyhound Racing Club’s signature race, the Spring Puppy Classic has been given Group 3 status.
It’s a bit of a feather in the cap for the club as very few country tracks have it.
The date for the Spring Classic has been set for October 19, while the next summer event will be on March 29.
Group 3 means it is an elite level race, with more prizemoney on offer and Shoalhaven now has two, with one in spring and one in summer.
Nominations for the event have been strong, with more than 220 entries from all around Australia.
A strong contingent of entrants from the Shoalhaven and the Illawarra are also expected as they would like to win their local classic.
The Puppy Classic has continued to grow in stature over the past five years, and has been supported by many of Australia’s leading breeders including Rodney McDonald, Mark Gatt, Mike Laffey, Ray Brown, Ruth Matic, Geoff Cook, Warren Laws, Colin Williams, Garry Edwards, Keith Wilmot, Harry Markou and Leon Bozovitch.
Nowra secretary/manager Glenn Midson said the sponsorship has helped take the race to the Group 3 level.
“The popularity of the Puppy Classic concept has continued to grow, with a one-off $100 entry fee,” he said.
“Due to the success of the original Puppy Classic for puppies whelped from January to June, we started another Puppy Classic for the classic age pups whelped from 1 July to
31 December in 2008, for the same one-off payment of $100 with a guaranteed winner’s prize of $25,000.
“There is also support for a spin off series over 365 metres and even
630 metre events for additional prizemoney.”
Midson said he was expecting a big crowd and some good quality races on the day.
