NOWRA’S embattled CCTV cameras should all be back on line by the end of the week with new signage in place.
A lack of adequate signage prevented the CCTV cameras being switched back on last Friday as planned, despite the NSW Government gazetting an amendment to the Privacy and Personal Information Regulation 2005 to exempt councils.
The Administrative Decisions Tribunal ruled privacy laws had been breached under the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 including that council’s signage was insufficient to ensure individuals were made aware that the information was collected for law enforcement purposes.
Council hurriedly arranged for new signage to be manufactured, with a local sign writer starting on the work Monday morning and the first of the signs were erected today in the Junction Court area.
Council plans to roll out the signs in particular areas so the cameras can be turned back on in that location.
The first cameras were expected to again go live this afternoon with the final cameras expected to be reactivated by Friday.
