A HOUSE in Waratah Crescent, Sanctuary Point was damaged by fire at 5.10am Monday.
St Georges Basin, Basin View and Sanctuary Point Rural Fire Brigades attended the fire.
The resident had managed to extinguish of the fire before firefighters arrived.
According to fire control officer Mark Williams most of the damage was limited to the rear section of the house.
“Smoke damage was, however, extensive,” he said.
“Our crews on the scene checked and determined that other fires had spread into the roof cavity which they extinguished before ventilating the house.
“The cause of the fire is under investigation but at this stage we believe it started in a mattress on the outside of the building.”
