Berry shows depth to take the premiership

NORTH Nowra-Cambewarra’s Blake Hartnett may have bowled 4/8, but this was not enough to secure the win for his team against Berry-Shoalhaven Heads in the under 12 grand final at Artie Smith Oval.

Berry won the toss and elected to bat first.

Opener Billy Hayburn was unlucky to be out for a duck after he was caught behind by Chase Boulding with 11 runs on the board for his team.

His partner Oliver Parrish stood firm at the crease to top score with 30 runs before he was caught and bowled by Harrison Graham.

Third order batsman Max Lans provided strong support for his team, smashing 13 runs before he was bowled off an excellent Ky Sims delivery.

The rest of the Berry side crumpled, with the bottom order not able to make much leeway.

Berry finished all out for 74 thanks to superb bowling from Norths’ Blake Hartnett (4/8), Naomi Woods (1/2), James Batson (1/4), Harrison Graham (1/10), Jhie Cushan (1/19), Kye Sims (1/7) and Thomas Shackleton (1/11).

Norths went in to bat and finished 9/39 at the end of day one’s play with top scores from James Batson (6), Ky Sims (6) and Harrison Graham (6).

On Sunday morning Norths resumed play at 9/39.

Berry thought it would tidy Norths up quickly, but Claudia Irons and Matthew Nash reused to budge after Irons was dropped on at the third ball of the morning.

Young Ben Lans, who normally plays modified rules, substituted for a player for this grand finals, was the player who caught the final batsman short of his crease and secure the win for his team.
