BRIDGE STUDY TENDER AWARDED

AECOM Consultants has been awarded the tender to carry out a study into the best possible location for a replacement of the southbound Shoalhaven River Bridge.

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) invited tenders in December last year to carry out a strategic site options assessment for the replacement of the southbound crossing on the Princes Highway at Nowra.

The NSW government allocated $1 million this financial year for the study which will consolidate investigations and studies previously carried out and will complete extra investigations to provide enough information to start considering options.

South Coast MP Shelley Hancock said the awarding of the tender was great news.

“This next step will provide the community and stakeholders with greater certainty about the future location of the southbound crossing,” she said.

“Community engagement will be an important part of the project and consultation is expected to start later this year.”

As part of this process, RMS will next week start detailed inspections of the bridge.

“The work will help gather information for the strategic site options assessment of the bridge and for future maintenance,” Kiama MP Gareth Ward said.

“RMS will use a crane mounted on a barge to inspect below and above the bridge deck to identify the location, extent and severity of corrosion on this key transport link across the Shoalhaven River.”

The inspections will start next Monday and be carried out on weekdays between 7am and 3pm and on weekends from 8am to 1pm, weather permitting.

“Access for marine and road traffic will be maintained at all times during the inspections,” Mr Ward said.

Work is expected to be completed by March 23.
