Local veterans bring home the cup

THE Shoalhaven Aboriginal Sports Club Kangaroos team and its B grade side, the SASC Bumberangs, competed in the fourth annual Goulburn Vets Shield Over 35s Tournament held at Cookbundoon Oval on February 2 and 3.

The Bumberangs got eliminated early on Sunday morning by the eventual Saucer winner Woden Valley 3-1.

The team played consistent on Saturday to record a nil-all draw against Goulburn Red Hats, a 2-all draw against Wagga, but lost 3-nil to Goulburn in its last match.

The Kangaroos, on its way to victory, recorded a nil-all draw with the opposition they would eventually meet again in the grand final, the Canberra Old Boys.

The Kangaroos then went on to defeat Temora 2-nil and the Goulburn Blue Hats 3-1.

The team defeated the Canberra Old Boys from Tuggeranong Football Club in the grand final 1-nil in a hard-fought match.

In its previous finals match, the Kangaroos accounted for red hot favourites and talk of the tournament, the Burradoo Blues, 2-0 after it soundly defeated Huskisson 4-nil in its first match.

Congratulations to Mark Smith, who took out the award for player of the tournament and also to stand-in goal keeper Willy Hampton, who only let the one goal in throughout the whole weekend.

Congratulations to Huskisson for taking out the plate final in a penalty shoot-out after extra time failed to produce a result.
