The facility is a proposed bitumen circuit, up to three-and-a-half kilometres long, located opposite the existing track at Braidwood Road Yerriyong, and estimated for completion in 12-18 months.
The finished project will host nine different motorcycle activities including: road racing, motocross, dirt track, speedway, minikhana (junior training), enduro riding, moto trails, super moto and Classic motocross as well as go kart competitions, car racing, drifting, cycling and all off-street racing.
Nowra O2 Auto Sports manager and professional race car driver Nathan Weissel said the track would reduce illegal car racing and bring with it millions of dollars from tourism.
“From service stations, to food outlets, to retail, every aspect of the community is going to benefit.”
Mr Weissel said the proposed track could help reduce hoon activity in the area, which is a major concern for police and community members.
“Councils keep building skate parks so skateboarders and BMX riders have somewhere legal to pursue their hobby and that seems to be working, so I don’t see why the same process can’t be applied to motorsport.
“You’re never going to get all of them off the street but if we can change the trend so that people street racing is decreased, that would be a win,” he said.
“Hopefully this project will change the community’s view about the whole motorsport industry and people who like to race bikes and cars.”
Nowra District Motorcycling Club will turn the track over to NSW Motorcycling, which will spend an estimated $12-15 million on the facility.
General manager of Motorcycling NSW, Daniel Gatt, said the project was self-funded.
“The state government has not committed to any part of the project, so at this stage the funding will be provided by Motorcycling NSW.
“We will be approaching all different levels of investment but we do have a model in place to be able to fund the project without any assistance.
“The more money we can get, the better the facility,” said Mr Gatt.
The existing facilities (on the western side) will remain the same but see some improvements and the new circuit will be built on the eastern side.
