SO, the idyllic rural scenery of the Shoalhaven is some sort of front for the cruel practices of dairy farming according to L. Imhof, (SCR Letters, February 8).
Is this for real? Reading weekend reports of the so-called animal welfare lobby wanting to ban sheep and cattle sale markets over the next few years because they stress the animals, causes me to wonder … maybe these people really are serious.
While I might be hard-pressed to know a heifer from a steer, spend a little time with some of our local farmers, as I’ve been privileged to do, and you will soon realise what great people they really are. They care for their cows, for their families and for their community (and not necessarily in that order).
At a time when fields and fences are burning and floods are devastating other areas, surely we should be encouraging the ladies and gentlemen of the land? So, let’s all wander through the livestock judging at our rural shows and see for ourselves any evidence that our farmers are anything but kind and considerate of their herds.
Above all, let’s say thanks, buy their produce and speak out against those who would seek to destroy a local industry that we all depend upon.
