On a mission to create jobs

SUMMER in the Shoalhaven is hot – and it’s nothing to do with the weather.

Mission Australia Employment Solutions is running its Summer in the Shoalhaven campaign to encourage local businesses to hire jobseekers.

Employers who lodge vacancies with Mission Australia go into a draw to win $100 every week, and then another draw every month for $200.

A local temporary fence hire company has been named the first winner of the campaign designed to get more local people into work.

Temporary Fencing Hire (TFH), which is a supplier of a range of temporary fencing systems servicing the greater South Coast, has been working with Mission Australia for three years, employing jobseekers who face significant challenges.

TFH Shoalhaven manager John Campbell was the first employer to be recognised in Summer in the Shoalhaven.

Mission Australia Employment Solutions regional manager for the Shoalhaven David Rawson said the campaign was an innovative way to get local people into jobs.

“Nowra and the South Coast generally present challenges for jobseekers,” he said.

“Unemployment in this region is sitting on about 10.8 per cent.

“It’s also a very seasonal area, relying heavily on the busy tourist period.

“We thought [Summer in the Shoalhaven] … might encourage [employers] to go the extra mile and give a jobseeker a go.”

Mission Australia has already found three jobseekers work, which Mr Rawson said was a fantastic outcome.

Mr Rawson said that TFH has been a supportive and understanding employer.

“John at Temporary Fencing has gone out of his way to give jobseekers a go, including those who have been out of work for a long period of time,” he said.

“Once his employees have proved themselves as general labourers, he gives them the opportunity to increase their skill levels and gain further qualifications and training, including forklift licences.

“He is a very passionate employer and we really thank him for his support.”

The Summer in the Shoalhaven campaign will continue in Nowra and Ulladulla throughout summer.
