AT the Gerringong Bowling Club; ‘We Are All Australians’ was the theme on Australia Day.
A group of 46 bowlers, most of them in Aussie outfits that would sit well in a display window of any R.M. Williams store, and some with a Aussie ocker larrikin flavour, graced the bowling green for an afternoon of fun. Bowls requiring a tape measure incurred a schooner of beer penalty and a wrong bias incurred a glass of chardonnay penalty making the afternoon a fun-filled Aussie good time. Competition was fierce never the less, and many a good bowl was rolled with a particular young 90 year old, let’s just call him Eddie, the man of the match, well done Eddie.
Bowls winners were; first – Team Heffernan (Heffo), runner-up – team Flanders, and third team Orford.
Of course you cannot have an Australia Day function without the traditional Aussie barbecue and we had one manned by our two legendary chefs Bob Wannell and Rod Orford who turned the sausages on cue.
It must have been good because many a bowler went back for seconds. These two guys always volunteer to cook whenever a barbecue is put on.
Father and daughter scooped the pool with Allan Wells and Kerrie Hall (nee Wells) declared best dressed male and female as the jackeroo and Miss Vegemite.
Although only two people stood on the winning podium, everyone present was a winner and all had a great Aussie Day. A big thank you to the organisers, especially Barbara Murphy and president Merv Lillye. Also to the people who work hard behind the scenes.
