Cancer centre on time, on budget

NINE months after construction began, the Shoalhaven Regional Cancer Care Centre is 75 per cent complete, still on budget and on schedule.

The milestone triggers a progress payment of $557,500 from the Shoalhaven City and Shoalhaven Lions Linear Accelerator and Cancer Treatment Fund-raising Committee.

Committee co-founder Paul Dean, who was pleased to learn of the progress, said the community should be proud of the $1.7 million raised over nine years.

“This is the first milestone for the committee. We have an agreement with NSW Health to pay across half our distribution $1.115 million,” he said.

“We are all very happy with the progress and the community should be happy too.”

Originally, $1 million was pledged as part of the application for the centre.

However, the committee thought the on-site accommodation needed to be slightly larger than originally planned and offered to raise an extra $115,000.

“All up we have raised about $1.7 million, of which the Lions clubs of the Shoalhaven raised about $75,000.

“It is fantastic how the community got behind this,” Mr Dean said.

The entire project is costed at $35 million.
