Hard work to keep children cool

AS temperatures soar, curtains are drawn and outdoor activities called off.

How do you keep 50 young children cool and occupied?

For Ekidna Kindy at Yalwal Road it was all about keeping the children cool, inside out of the heat and having lots of “fun things to do.”

Ekidna Kindy authorised supervisor Karly Goddard said last Tuesday’s extreme weather was a test.

“It was extremely hot and all outside activities were off limits, which meant entertaining babies up to six-year-olds inside all day,” she said.

“We were lucky we have an airconditioned centre.

“But we kept the kids occupied with lots of fun inside activities. We had ice blocks, lots of nice cold drinks and water play inside to keep the kids cool and entertained as well as a host of other activities.

“But it was a tough job to keep the kids occupied and it certainly tested our educators.”

Ms Goddard did say that almost 50 per cent of parents decided to keep their children home during the extreme heat.
