Celebration a big success

THE celebrations to mark Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s historic flight across the Tasman have been hailed a success.

Margaret Sharpe from the Gerringong and District Historical Society and Nancy Bevan from the Berry Historical Society said activities organised by both groups had been well received.

 “The whole

celebration was a great success from the screening of the Australian made film Smithy through to the guest speakers evening and official celebrations at Gerroa,” Mrs Sharpe said.

Mrs Bevan said good crowds were on hand at the Seven Mile Beach picnic area.

“While we would have liked to have 1000 people on the beach to re-enact 1933, we fell short but we still had a good crowd,” Mrs Bevan said.

“The weekend was fantastic and a great way to mark the 80th anniversary.”
