DESPITE cooler and calmer conditions the Deans Gap fire continues to be a threatening presence in the Shoalhaven.
More than 100 firefighters were working to strengthen containment lines around the fire’s perimeter yesterday.
Cooler temperatures and higher humidity on Saturday night enabled crews to undertake back-burning designed to protect properties in the vicinity of Jannung Lane, Jerrawangala.
Containment lines were also strengthened around Wandean, Twelve Mile Peg and Cassia roads which remain closed other than to local traffic.
Firefighters have also spent Sunday identifying hot spots and blacking out active fire edge in anticipation of the warming temperatures later in the week.
Weather concern is now focused on a return to hot conditions later in the week.
Local Emergency Operations Commander police Superintendent Joe Cassar has asked Shoalhaven residents not to let their guard down.
“This fire is not out,” Supt Cassar said.
“Please stay abreast of all warnings and updates on this fire via your local media and the RFS website.”
