Fire fighters are bracing for catastrophic fire conditions in the Shoalhaven today.
RFS brigades across the Shoalhaven are on heightened alert, firefighting assets will be moved to strategic locations and water bombing helicopters are expected to arrive in Nowra late today or tomorrow morning.
“It is more than likely we will head into the catastrophic danger rating tomorrow so we are scaling up,” Mr Williams said.
“We had a phone hook-up with all the group officers and we will have our brigades on the air.
“We will be lodging a pre-emptive section 44 declaration [localised state of emergency] and we’ve got a couple of inspectors coming to the region to assist in the incident management team.
“We will have a bare-bones incident management team here ready tomorrow morning.
“This is a perfect warning day; there is no excuse why people aren’t cleaning up around their houses and making sure their bushfire survival plans are ready,” Mr Williams said.
During bushfires embers can travel many kilometres. If you haven’t already done so, make final preparations to reduce the risk of embers starting fires on your property today.
Clear leaves from the roof gutters, remove combustible door mats, remove and store flammable material away from the house, make sure LPG gas cylinder pressure relief valves face away from the house.
When conditions reach the catastrophic fire danger rating the Rural Fire Service recommends leaving your property early.
