As well as Berry’s Veda FitzSimons impressive ATAR score, elite sportswomen Kyah Gray did exceptionally well in her subjects.
Kyah is completing Pathways, which means she does her HSC over two years because of her commitment to playing state and national level hockey.
The Shoalhaven Heads local travels to Sydney at least three times a week, and to Wollongong four times a week, for representative hockey.
In her first round of HSC results, Kyah received 90 for chemistry, 88 for advanced English, 93 overall mark for mathematics with a 97 exam mark, and 43 out of 50 for mathematics extension one.
Kyah will study biology, PDHPE and agriculture next year with the aim of studying veterinary science at Sydney University.
“It’s what I have always wanted to do,” she said.
“It was very good doing Pathways, because I had less subjects, I could fit schoolwork in with all my training,” she said.
Kyah said time management and hard work were the key to her success in sport and study.
“I would get the laptop out in the car so I could get my work done on the way to training,” she said.
“I was just relieved to see that I went well. I put in a lot of effort so I wasn’t really surprised with my marks. I would have liked to get a band 6 with my English though.”
Maddison Cook was another Bomaderry high achiever. Maddison scored 84 in geography, 85 in advanced mathematics, 87 in English advanced, 84 in drama, and 46 out of 50 in English extension one and two.
“I was pretty nervous, but probably not as much as others because I had already been accepted into university,” she said.
Maddison will study communication and media studies at the University of Wollongong next year with the hope of becoming a journalist or publisher.
Her brilliant mark in extension two English was because of an 8000-word short story she wrote about a young lady living in a nursing home with multiple sclerosis.
