Eighteen young women from years 7 to 10 have already volunteered to be in the club.
Supported by the Zonta Club of Berry, the young women are given an opportunity to interact with experienced Zonta sponsors.
They will meet once a week. Through different activities the girls will work together to better their society and the world by gaining an understanding of their school and the community and by developing international awareness.
“They will gain a wider understanding of women’s issues and be exposed to how a committee works,” said Zonta Club of Berry's Z Club Chair Helen Buchanan.
The girls are already planning their first fundraising exercise – making and selling Mother’s Day cards.
“I just thought it would be a good experience where we can help women around the world,” said Z Club member Natalie Carey, 15.
“It is important for the younger generation to realise the problems women are facing in other countries.”
Ms Carey said they have their sights on other fundraising activities including a car wash and cake stalls.
“Basically, any stall that we can get our hands on,” said fellow Z Cub member Barbara Smith, 17.
Z Club school co-ordinator Maxine Kelaher was the year 12 adviser last year. She said co-ordinating the Z Club was a natural progression from that.
“I think it’s important, especially where we are located in the Shoalhaven, to raise the status of women. As a way to do that, we can start with the girls so they know how they should be treated and how they can expect to be treated,” she said.
There will be a charter presentation at the school on May 4 at 1pm.
Members of the Zonta Club of Berry will present the students with a certificate and badge to officially establish them as part of the Z Club.
