WARILLA-Lake South’s hot streak continued with a 42-22 thrashing of Milton-Ulladulla at Cec Glenholmes Oval on Saturday.
Led by dynamic half-back Beau Henry- who scored two tries and had a hand in several others- and the power of skipper Damien Paulissen upfront, the Gorillas were at times unstoppable.
The home side was in scintillating touch early: tries to Aaron Henry and Andrew Gent within the first seven minutes put Milton on the back foot immediately at 12-nil, and they never recovered.
Compounding the Bulldogs’ difficulties were some fundamental errors and lack of discipline, which allowed Warilla an easy path out of their own half on several occasions.
The home side took advantage of its uperior field position, Beau Henry strolling through a huge gap for a four-pointer and Nathan Badger finishing off some strong running to lead 22-nil after just 15 minutes.
Despite having several additional opportunities the Gorillas then seemed to get a little carried away and bombed several sure-fire chances.
Milton kept in the contest with a converted try to Daniel Peat shortly before half-time, although a Shane Withers penalty goal pushed Warilla’s lead back out to 24-6 at the break.
The Gorillas looked inspired again early in the second half, upping the tempo.
Beau Henry bagged his second try just minutes in and off the back of Milton’s Paul Winshuttle being sent off for a high tackle and Mick Blattner’s sin-binning, tries to Ben Harvey and Thomas Hart put Warilla ahead 42-6.
Although the game had become a procession, the Gorillas took their foot off the accelerator and the Bulldogs responded, with consolation tries to hard-working lock Steine Lofts, Ben Chapple and Bobbie Condie in the final 22 minutes giving some respectability to the scoreline.
It was a dominant performance from the Gorillas, however the scoreboard flattered the visitors, who were fortunate to not have several more tries scored against them.
Damien Paulissen, Beau Henry and Shane Withers were the standouts for the Gorillas, while Adam Stone, Greg Sherwin and Steine Lofts were the best for Milton.
Warilla coach Peter Hooper was pleased with the result, but agreed they could have won by a much larger margin.
“We went back to a lack of discipline and didn’t show enough respect for the ball,” he said.
“I’m still very happy with the two points though.”
