Jeffrey Cup to South Coast

SOUTH Coast comfortably won last Sunday’s final of the Jeffrey Cup, Southern Zone Cricket’s under 20 competition.

Batting first at the Croome Road Sporting Complex, Shoalhaven Greens were restricted to a total of 9/171 from their 50 overs.

While opener Jarryd Ingold and captain Aaron Basile each scored half-centuries, none of their team-mates reached double figures.

After an opening stand of 170 between Pat Moulton and Brynley Richards, South Coast took the trophy by nine wickets with 9.2 overs remaining.

Positions up for grabs

THE resumption of two-day matches in the SDCA last weekend meant that the gaps between teams suddenly appeared smaller.

With first innings points assured, Berry-Shoalhaven Heads appears set to extend its margin in first grade.

Challengers for top spots in third grade, Ulladulla United and Sussex Inlet have also established leads and will look to win outright.

Although there were some declarations, few of the lower grade teams appeared capable of batting out the day.

Batsmen to the fore

SOME 14 batsmen passed 50 in the round, and four of them went on to notch centuries – Shane Wallace and Trent Boundy in first grade, and Daniel Bryant and Warren Ganderton in second.

Three others were dismissed within sight of the hundred.

On the other hand, the bowlers were made to work for their wickets with only two snaring bags of five – Gary Evans in third grade, and David Webb in fourth.

Bradman Cup battle

AFTER struggling in the first two rounds, Southern Zone finished strongly in last week’s Bradman Cup (under 16) carnival at Coffs Harbour.

The side won narrowly over Western Zone on day three, and then overcame Central Coast in the play-off for fifth place.

Of the Shoalhaven contingent, Kieran Gray, Lachlan Lamont and Jordan Matthews all shone at times.

Match details and reports appeared in Monday’s edition.

Touring time

THE break in junior matches is enjoyed by those Shoalhaven teams that contest the Western NSW carnivals at Orange.

The under 13s are away this week, while it is the turn of the 15s next week.

Shoalhaven also hosted a visiting New Zealand side last Saturday, when the visitors performed the traditional haka before taking the field.

Behind The Stumps
