Mogg farewells Oran Park

03 Jul, 2009 11:20 AM
LOCAL racing car driver Norm Mogg had an interesting time at the final Historic Meeting at Oran Park at the weekend.

Mogg lined up in his former Walkinshaw VL Commodore in the Group A-C category, which represents the period 1973 to 1984.

The cars racing are not replicas, they are the actual vehicles raced in these years, and many of them still carry the names of sponsors and drivers now long gone from motor racing.

Mogg’s Commodore was actually campaigned by Win Percy and Neil Crompton for HRT.

It was the last time the historic category will race at the Oran Park set up as it is soon to be turned into a housing development, something Mogg says is sad.

“It was sad in some ways, I really enjoy Oran Park as a circuit, it is a real driver’s track no doubt about it,” he said.

“It will be a shame not to be racing there again.”

In a solid weekend Mogg qualified his Commodore in second position.

“I was pretty happy with that considering we didn’t put any new rubber on the car for the meeting,” he said.

“We made the decision to run the whole weekend on old tyres and that did hurt us, in this category you do need fresh tyres to be competitive.

“But at $2500 to kit the car out for the weekend we decided it was better to save our money.”

Race one was cut short to just three laps and Mogg drove well to finish third.

“Three laps doesn’t give you much time to settle in,” he said.

Starting from position three in the second race on Sunday, Mogg really started to feel the effects of his tyres and dropped to fifth from the start.

He fought his way back through the five-lap event and eventually finished third.

“It was a bit disappointing, we simply didn’t have the grip of the two front cars,” he said.

The VL also looked a bit worse for wear after the race with a bit of paint swapping as Mogg raced door handle to door handle with another competitor through the first two twisting turns.

Starting the final nine-lap event from third he again slipped to fifth off the start as his tyres deteriorated.

“We really had to wrestle with the car in the final race,” he said.

“Our tyres had gone off markedly and the car was over steering on most of the faster corners.”

Despite this Mogg turned in another top drive to force his way back up into and finish in third.

This included seven laps when Mogg’s Commodore looked like it was virtually stuck to the rear end of an AX Torana, he was that close.

He also suffered a knock to the rear driver’s door from a BMW off the start into the opening corner.

“The car got a bit knocked around which is very disappointing, we don’t like to see that happen,” he said.

“But overall I was happy with the result.”

He and his team are now preparing the car for the Muscle Car Masters which will be staged at Eastern Creek on the Father’s Day weekend.

“The car will go to Peter Barton’s Smash Repairs next week for some repairs and we will have it all fired up for Eastern Creek,” he said.

“And yes we will have new tyres for that meet.

“I must really thank all the local support we have – On Line Labour Hire, PB Smash Repairs, Robert Bridge Motorsport, Shoalhaven Safety Supply all back us.

“And those guys along with Peter Bennett and Dave Harding make up our crew and come along to every meet and even though they are sponsors they put their all into the car.

“I can’t thank them enough.

“Thanks also to James Dicker who came along again as the team’s official photographer for the weekend.”
