THE honours keep coming for Shoalhaven Heads hockey star Kyah Gray.
Gray has been selected in the NSW under 18 field team that will contest the Australian under 18 nationals that will be staged in Newcastle from April 9-12.
After being runners-up last year, losing to Victoria in the final in extra time, she hopes the young NSW team can go one better in 2012.
It has certainly been a busy time for Gray.
She was captain of the NSW under 18 indoor team that won the national championship in Brisbane.
NSW downed Victoria in the final 4-2.
But it was her performance and in particular her inspirational speech prior to the semi-final clash against arch rivals Queensland, who downed NSW in the corresponding game the previous year, that impressed.
And the NSW side certainly lifted, Kyah herself scoring in the opening few minutes before the side went on to record a resounding 10-nil victory.
Seventeen-year-old Kyah was also a member of the NSW women’s open team that was runner-up at the national championships in Sale, Victoria.
NSW went down in the final to Victoria, but that disappointment was soon to fade when Gray was named in the Australian indoor merit team.
New national indoor coach Stewart Fenton, who also coached the Victorians to the national crown, named a 12-player team of the championships with Gray selected.
While at this stage there isn’t a tournament planned for the team to take part in, Gray was delighted with the honour.
“This is huge,” she said.
“Just to be named in the NSW open women’s team was fantastic, and a great experience but to be named in the national squad of 12 is amazing.”
