Now in its 22nd year, it is the longest running and biggest individual surfing contest on the south Coast.
The event will staged at Werri Beach, Gerringong over two days on April 25-26 and will see some of the hottest surfing talent in the Illawarra and South Coast vying to claim a Slash title.
A new age division has been created this year with the addition of the cadet under 16 years girls.
The surge in female surfing numbers in recent years has seen the need to establish a separate division for the younger female surfers and event organisers are hoping that the younger girls of the region will take up the opportunity to compete among others of similar age.
As per recent years, the blue ribbon division will be the open men’s, alongside the regular divisions of open women’s, senior men’s, under 18 junior boy’s and under 16 cadet boy’s.
Werri Boardriders are pleased to announce three new major sponsors for the club and the event. Carve Eyewear has become a major sponsor of the Werri Beach Boardriders Club and will continue their association with The Slash which is now into their fifth year.
Also coming on board is Happy Daize, a clothing and accessory company established by Gerringong local Hayley O’Sullivan. Happy Daize will be the sponsor of the Open Women’s division.
Werri Boardriders also welcome Martin and Holmes Legal, based in Kiama, Peter Martin has renewed his association with The Slash with partner Peter Holmes.
With other longtime sponsors Surf Dive ‘N’ Ski, DSN Surfboards, Gerringong Hardware and Kiama Council, another exciting weekend of competitive surfing is promised.
Without any other major event planned on that same weekend, the best of the local pro juniors such as Ulladulla’s Sam Wrench, Werri locals Dean Bowen and Tom Salveson, Currarong brothers Jordi and Ty Watson, and Thirroul’s Tim Bilmon should be available to compete alongside reigning open men’s champion Tim Wrench, and last year’s finalists Tully Robinson, Nick Squires and Byron Bartlett.
Due to the James “Fuzzy” Hughes Memorial Comp on April 25, Slash organisers have moved the senior mens division to the Sunday with the open mens so that those who wish can surf in both events.
The cadet boys and girls, junior boys and opne womens will begin their heats on the Saturday with all finals on Sunday afternoon.
Entry forms are available from the Werri Beach Boardriders website.
