The Northern beaches event was the fifth in a series of seven events in the Wahu tour, with the next competition to be held in Cronulla next month.
Gillick unleashed a sizzling display of wave riding to score an impressive 9.33 out of a possible ten and take the tournament ahead of Cronulla’s Harrison Martin and Bronte’s Adam Perica.
“I was stoked on how I won it, I thought I surfed really well, but I came in from the heat and got interviewed and them one of them asked me ‘how does it feel’ and that’s when it hit me!” he said.
“I was really happy with how I surfed and the conditions, there were some nice waves, not that big, had they had some good shape to them.”
It was Martin who first threw down the gauntlet in the deciding round with a score of 7.33 as the surfers welcomed in the 1.5 metre swell that had been brought in overnight with a southerly change.
At just 14, Louis showed remarkable poise and class to respond with his high-scoring ride, which his competitors just could not reel in.
“I’ve surfed out there once or twice, I think that helped, that was probably about a year or so ago now,” he said.
“I haven’t been in any of the other ones (in the Wahu series), I don’t think we really noticed them until this one came around!”
Gillick’s win is even more remarkable considering his mainly modest previous form in competitions.
“I’ve been in a couple of comps before, but I haven’t really gone that well,” he said.
“I haven’t done that well in many others, I’ve had a few where I’ve gone out in the second round.”
2010 is an exciting new year for the young gun, with the Cronulla leg of the Groms Comps series his next port of call.
“The next one’s in Cronulla and hopefully the waves will be good and I’ll do alright!”
