Demons aim to reclaim mantle

29 Jan, 2010 09:58 AM
2010 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the Albatross Demons in the South Coast AFL.

A new decade, a new committee and new clubrooms – it appears a new breeze has blown through Tom Smith Oval.

President Allan Nolan admitted the club has been reinvigorated and is looking forward to the 2010 SCAFL season.

“Pre-season training will start on Tuesday, February 2 and we are all looking forward to getting back on the playing field,” he said.

“We are looking for a big year for the Demons, we want to return to our mantle as one of the dominant clubs in the SCAFL.”

Joining Nolan on the Demons’ committee is Simon Levy and Clint Maynard as vice-presidents, while long-time Demon stalwart Duane Unwin is also back in an official capacity as secretary.

There has been a hive of activities at the Demons’ home ground at HMAS Albatross in the off season including the erection of new clubrooms.

“We have been without a clubroom for about five years so to finally have one re-established at Tom Smith Oval is fantastic,” said vice-president Simon Levy.

“It is great to again have a home base – we are hoping that the days of wet uncomfortable afternoons in the middle of winter at Tom Smith Oval are a thing of the past.

“It’s a new decade, we have a new committee, new clubrooms and we are looking for a new start for the Demons.

“It’s almost like a rebirth.

“We really must thank Greg Lamont Constru-ctions and Serco Sodexho for their help in relocating the building from HMAS Creswell and then Greg and his team and a host of club volunteers who have done a superb job ensuring the rooms have been completed.”

And the new set-up also includes an all weather timekeeper’s box.

And to honour the passing of former club member Barry Cruick-shanks just a few weeks ago, the bar in the new clubrooms has been officially named the Baz Bar in his honour.

And the Demons and Nowra Blues will play off for the Barry Cruick-shanks Shield once a year, the first time the two clubs meet each season at Tom Smith Oval.

But club officials know it is not going to be an easy task to get back to the pointy end of the competition.

They will have to be competitive against competition heavyweights Kiama, who broke through for their first premiership last season, and perennial champions Bomaderry, who the Power stopped from collecting a four-peat of titles last year.

And it has been a long time between drinks for the Demons – their last title success was in reserve grade in 2005, while the last coveted first grade title was way back in 1997, although they have featured unsuccessfully in a couple of grand finals since then.

And one of the first hit outs for the new-look Demons will be at the annual pre-season start to the season, the Tom Smith Round Robin which has tentatively been laid down for March 27.

And while the playing roster looks similar to last year and they are hopeful of attracting some new signings’ there is one stumbling block for the Demons.

They are still to appoint a senior coach.

“We had one guy lined up, but that has unfortunately fallen through,” Nolan said.

“So we are working hard to arrange a senior coach.”

The Demons’ first pre-season training run will be on Tuesday, February 2 at Tom Smith Oval at Albatross from 5.30pm to be followed by a barbecue.

The club is looking for any players who would like to participate in season 2010, be they former players or anyone who hasn’t played before.
